Tuesday is the last day to sign up for Cardi Claus!

Can you believe November is already halfway gone?!?! If you have not yet signed up for Cardi Claus, you only have one day left!

For the uninitiated, Cardi Claus is a virtual Christmas Party/Ornament Exchange for people who are linked to each other with a love of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. We have done this for a few years now, and it has been a hoot. Wanna play? Here's how:

1. First, if you sign up to play, please don't disappoint us by not following through.

2. Let me know by November 15 that you want to participate. Email cardiclaus at gmail.com (a new address this year) with the following information:

Your name

Shipping address

Phone number

Information about your pack

Any other information about you that will help your Cardi Claus get to know you a little better (think about what you would like to learn about your intended recipient!)

And just to clear up something that sometimes confuses new participants. I will send you the name of the person you will play Cardi Claus for. A different person will be your Cardi Claus – this way, everyone gets to make a holiday connection with two other people – the one you gift, and the one who gifts you!

3. By November 17, I will send you information about your recipient. You will have a couple of weeks to get your package together, and then . . .

4. YOU WILL SHIP YOUR PACKAGE ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 1. Did everyone see that?? This to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to get their packages in time to really enjoy them!

This picture is from the puppy party, the day that Lauri became Lowri and went home to live with Susan and be a herding dog.

Today she is CH Mockingbird Elyan Magic Moment PT, the first champion from my first litter, with letters on both ends of her name before she even turns 11 months old! And of course does it all in grand style, picking up a major at the Western Reserve, another major at the Lexington specialty, a Best in Breed over specials yesterday, a Best of Opposite over specials today, and Puppy Herding Group One today as well. Tomorrow she is going to solve the European debt crisis. Or roll in the mud. Probably both.

Congratulations to Mama Susan, Mama Cheryl and Mama/Grandma Penni! Thanks for giving my baby a wonderful home and lots to do!

Who wants a visit from Cardi Claus?

OK - Halloween has passed, so the retailers say we are officially now in the "holiday season." So, it must be time to start preparing for a visit by the jolly little Cardi Claus!

For those who have not participated before, we started doing this a few years ago as a way to make new cardi friends across the miles and share a little holiday cheer. The original intent was to do an ornament exchange. Folks let me know that they wanted to play, and sent their delivery details and a little information about their pack. Once I had everyone's information, Cardi Claus would study the information and try to match up folks with each other, share information, and let the fun commence.

It has always been fun to sit back and watch the fun. Most who have participated have been bloggers in the past, and it has always been fun to check out each other's blogs and enjoy each others surprises that showed up in the mail.

For the most part, response has been enthusiastic - in fact in some cases, hugely so. While just intended to an ornament exchange, some folks also tucked in a treat or two for the dogs. Others went way over the top and sent what can only be compared to a Harry and David's Super Colossal Tower of Treats for hooman and dog. And, unfortunately, a very few said they wanted to participate, and then just faded away, leaving their intended recipient empty handed.

So, shall we do it again? In my post yesterday, I have already heard that there is interest! So, let's go - and here are the rules:

Home from Lexington

This morning we are sitting under what's left of Tropical Storm Lee - the first rain in more than a month here in Chattanooga. I thought it might be a good time to post some about the weekend.

We went to Lexington KY this weekend for the Labor Day shows. Heidi headed up first, picked up one of my EZ-up tents which Cheryl M transported for us, and she single handedly got a great spot and PUT THE TENT UP ALL BY HERSELF! Seriously folks, this is not an easy thing to do! Laura and I arrived the next day and brought another tent, more x pens and a generator in the Cardi Party Wagon. Kathy brought a third tent on Friday morning, and Cardi Camp was built.

We had set up a big Cardi play area with three xpens before Kathy got there, and after we got her tent up, we set about to move the xpens and cardis under the tent. I wish someone had gotten this on tape, because it was a sight to see. With all the dogs in the pens, all the humans lifted the xpens just off the ground and we started moving to the tent. The dogs figured out right away what we were doing, and the herd easily moved across the field to the tent! Here's a short video of all the dogs in the pen on Saturday morning:

On Friday, brother David from the Ocho came to visit - look at how handsome he is!

Saturday was a supported show and sweepstakes. Sis Lowri was the star, winning Best in Sweeps and Winners Bitch. Later she won Puppy Group 2 as well. Laura's Rosie was reserve after being WB on Friday. Brother Tommy was Best of Opposite in Sweeps. Sister Ginger showed well, and Sister Sally - well, she showed up. Let's just say that Sally and Mama Scout made it perfectly clear - they don't like heat or outdoor shows, and that's all we are going to say about that. Heidi's Rush was BOB and went on to a Group 3 (and a Group 4 on Sunday!).

We had a pot luck lunch planned after the show on Saturday, but it was so blazingly hot (100+ temp), it was not a great day to hang out and enjoy. We had a bunch of great folks there, but it was just too awful to spend much time outside. As we were huddled under our little spot of shade, we heard a call for medical personnel over the loud speaker. Later we learned that an Obedience Judge had collapsed. We hear the Lexington Club has the opportunity to move this show to a new indoor venue, but apparently some of the club's "old guard" is resisting it. Hopefully after this year, they will re-consider.

On Sunday, we loaded up the wagon and headed home - here's how Spencer spent the ride home - perched in his "special boy" seat:

Yesterday Tommy picked up a 4 pt major in Atlanta. Such a handsome boy! Sunday update: Tommy wins another 4 pt major!

Sally seems to want to make sure she keeps going to lots of dog shows, and was Reserve the three days we were there. She thinks hotel rooms are the most fun places ever - because she gets to fly between beds and play with her BFFs (TJ, Alley and Ginger).

Next stop Lexington, where on Saturday the five brindles from the Ocho will have a frapping reunion on Saturday. Ginger, Tommy, Lowri and Sally are entered, and David, who lives nearby, will come out to the site as well.

We had quite a day today, filled with ups and downs. By the end of the day we had an obnoxious display of ribbons on our tent at the Western Reserve show.

Unfortunately, as I said, there were downs too. I received word this morning that my mom is not doing well, and I had to deal today with faxes back and forth to get her in hospice care. Tomorrow morning I am heading back home. Scout is going to stay here with Cheryl.

Hope the girls continue kicking butt tomorrow!

A Surreal, but Nice, Weekend

Saturday was ummmmm, interesting. We were brought back to earth by the dog show gods - after our big double major weekend two weeks ago, yesterday Sally was 4th in the Bred-by class. 4th out of 4. Ouch.

On the good side, the judge liked brother Tommy and Mama Scout - Tommy got Reserve and Scout was BOB.

Sally and I were both a bit off yesterday - we got in very late to the hotel, and lazy me did not take a crate inside for her. I think she had trouble settling down because of that. Then we had an 8 o'clock ring time, the hairdryer in the hotel room wouldn't work, and at 6:30 in the morning it was already 85 and 110% humidity or as we call it, "air you can wear." It was also Sally's first time at a big show - noisy and lots of people and dogs - and it didn't even hit me until late yesterday afternoon that I had not even thought about how difficult that probably was for her. Any or none of these could have contributed to it - but it just was not our day.

We all crashed early last night and today was a better day. Sally and I walked around a good bit before we went in the ring I played "hooman pez dispenser" and gave her lots of treats. We were both more relaxed and it showed in how she moved in the ring. And I was pleased as punch when the judge gave her Winner's Bitch and a 5 point major. That gets her to 14 points.

Sally is one bouncy puppy. While we on the dogshow trip to Richmond, she figured out the shortest distance between the two beds was to take flight between them. And she did over and over and over again.

On the next dogshow trip to Southaven, she reprised her act many more times. But today she shocked the heck out of me. I have taught the dogs to "help me" - that's the command when they are getting in their crates in the Element. The put their front paws on the tailgate and I boost them up.

But today went I asked Sally to help, she looked like she was going to do the normal thing, but instead she sprang straight up and landed lightly on the tailgate. Neither Scout nor Spencer have ever thought about doing this. This pup never ceases to amaze me.

Home Again

Chattanooga traffic was a beast tonight. Major arteries shut down by two wrecks and road constuction. Side roads (i.e., paved goat trails) clogged by drivers who idled their gas away. The last 10 miles of our trip took over an hour.

But overall, it was a great weekend. Laura and I drove over to Southaven MS for a show. Heidi met us there Saturday morning. Lots of old and new friends were there, including Betty and Ted, owners of the Intrepid Tommy of the Ocho.

Sally had a big weekend, picking up two 4-point majors. Scout picked up a Group 2 and 9 more Gch points. Tommy and Betty had lovely showings - his points will come in due time. Up in Michigan, lovely littermate Ginger went to her first show and got a 3 pt major, making Kathy very proud as well.

I am so proud of all the Ocho. The show dogs have made awesome starts, and all eight are champions of the heart with their great families. I feel very lucky to have had such a fabulous first breeding experience.

Weekend Wrap-up - First Dog Show in 10 months!

Heidi and I loaded up the Element and my new little "Cardi Party Wagon" and headed up to Richmond VA this past weekend.

Mama Scout and Sally in one crate, Papa Rush and Alley in the other. Uncle Grump Spencer reclined on his (my) king sized tempurpedic pillow right behind the front seats - he loves being the special boy.

On Saturday, Miss Sallywags picked up her first CH point. She also came home from the show with a new tag for her crate, her very own Show Octopus, and a very blingy new show lead. Mama Scout was BOB, too.

After showing Saturday morning, Ann Taylor graciously invited all of the cardi folks to her home for lunch and cardi play time. We got to spend time with representatives of the Red Horde, an international man of mystery, "Dwayne" and JF, and their respective people.

Sunday was Rush's day to shine and boy, did he - with a Group 4 placement. (Also congrats go to Dewi (Dwayne's alter ego) who earned his CGC certification at the show!)

And as usual, we always find a way to enjoy the local fare when we travel to shows. Saturday we had a fantastic dinner at Pescados, a latin-caribbean seafood restaurant. On Sunday, we hit the Edelweiss Restaurant in Staunton VA on the way home, a place I have always wanted to visit - wonderful home-style german food and charming as all get-out.

We made it home today, and got a chance to rest up a bit before heading back to work tomorrow. Oh how I have missed going to dogshows! Don't forget to sign up for Southaven MS shows - they close on Wednesday!

Alli, the pretty red girl, went out today with her pretty red headed junior handler, and was winners bitch, crossed over to pick up another point as best of winners, and also best of opposite sex! Congratulations Madison and Alli!

The Spookiest House on the Bay

These pictures were shot from the back deck of our vacation house in Fort Morgan AL. Our house had decks on both the east and west side - almost all day one or the other had a delightful breeze and view.

This house, however, kind of skeeved me. Is it not the spookiest looking thing?

(These pictures are actually a bit misleading - the house looks like it is in a fog, but actually the fog was on my camera lens - after I brought it out of the air conditioned house to the high humidity outside. But I think the fog just illustrates how creepy this place was.)

One thing that was strange about this house was how it changed colors during the day. In the morning, it was a yellow-y beige, but in the late afternoon and evening, it turned gray.

One night I noticed that there was a sign over the front porch which I figured was the name of the house. (The name of our happy house was "You are My Sunshine" which was a perfect name for it.)

There was a pair of binoculars in the house, so I got them to see if I could read the name. It was . . . .

"Journey's End." How creepy is that???

Sally's Beach Report

Hey everybody! I see now why that lady I live with was so excited about going to the beach! It is really fun. We go to the beach every morning and late afternoon when it is not so hot. We run and play in the water. Sometimes the water chases us, and sometimes it runs away from us. I try to catch the birds that are flying low over the water. I haven't caught one yet, but I have one more day to try.

We are always on our flexi leads on the beach, because that's the law, but sometimes we see other dogs breaking that law, in particular this one German Shepherd Dog who is staying at a house right on the beach. His people just let him do whatever he wants, and whenever he sees us, he wants to run up where we are.

As you may know, my Uncle Grump has "issues" with GSDs. This goes way back when a crazy GSD tried to get our lady, and Uncle Grump didn't like it one bit. Ever since, he thinks all GSDs are up to no good.

Yesterday we were walking towards the water, that GSD came up behind us. We all decided to protect our lady so we all ran back to try to get to him. In the process of doing this, we managed to wrap our flexible leads all around our lady's legs. Of course, we were barking very loud and she was yelling at the GSD's people to come get their dog. About that time, there was a large gust of wind that blew somebody's big beach umbrella right on our lady.

This caused her to yell out a pretty ugly word for all to hear. A man came and got the umbrella and asked her if she was ok. Finally a woman came and got the GSD, but for some reason, she didn't feel like she needed to say anything to our lady. We finally got ourselves untangled and went on to have fun playing in the water. Today we did not see the GSD - we hope he went home.

We only have one more day here - it has gone by so quickly!

There are some suggestions for fixes, but sounds like Google Engineering is stumped.

I logged into google with "keep me logged on" unclicked. After that, I was able to post to Susan's blog.

Or is anyone else having trouble posting comments on blogger blogs? Every time I try, I select to use my google id, which used to work just fine. Now it sends me to blogger login page, and I put in my gmail address and pw, it takes me back to the comment page, I enter the goofy word, hit enter and sends me back to blogger log in page again.

Does this happen to anyone else? Of course, if it does, you can't leave me a message here and tell me, can you? Argghhhh!

Anyhow - I am trying to post to several of your blogs, but for some reason google/blogger won't let me!

I have the opportunity for a Saturday night with two good looking fellows - actually, two international men of mystery. Unfortunately, the opportunities are on the same Saturday night but not in the same city.

The choices are:

Chews on a stick.

On June 25, Maksim Chmerkovskiy will return to Chattanooga to host a benefit for Partnership for Families, Children and Adults. Laura and I went last year and had a ball. Maks was an absolute doll. He seemed to have a great time and raised a boatload of money, even auctioning off his pants.

However, I had been planning to take Sally to her first show in Richmond VA that weekend - and visit Big Nick and Liz.

What to do?????

Easy choice - we're coming to you, Nick!

Happy Birthday to Spencer and Wilson!

I can't believe my boy is 8 years old today! A little greyer in the face, but still acts like a puppy when it's dinnertime. He's my first cardigan, and it's thanks to him that I ended up with the other two, as well as the legion of good "dog" friends, including you who are reading this now.

As an aside (with a purpose for this post), I generally try not to talk much on my blog about things that are not going so well. I have posted before about my mom's health, but not much lately, as she continues to decline with what was orignally diagnosed as vascular dementia, and now appears to be combined with Alzheimer's as well. For the most part, she does not have a good grip on the reality of the world around her, but every once in a while she comes up with some nuggets of gold.

A few weeks ago I was visiting her and I was talking about the dogs, telling her about how big Sally was getting, etc. Out of the blue, she came up with one of those nuggets - she said, "You will never have another one who looks after you like Spencer does." It brought tears to my eyes. In fact it brings them now just thinking about it.

And she is exactly right. Spencer is spoiled, spoiled, spoiled. He gets away with way too much. But he is devoted to me and is the dog of my heart like no other will ever be. Happy Birthday big guy! (and brother Wilson too!)

Fun with sheep

Today Scout and Sally and I had a fun day with sheep. I had read in our kennel club newsletter about a Herding Instinct test not too far away from us. My original intention was just to test Sally, but after corresponding with the instructor, I decided to enter Scout in the workshop as well.

Scout's last experience with sheep was over three years ago - I really wanted to enter Scout in the Herding Titled Bitch competition at the 2008 specialty, and she needed one more HT leg. I had suffered a back injury in 2007 and had back surgery that knocked me for a loop for a while. I tried to work with Scout at Susan's, but I just couldn't do it, so Susan agreed to try to get that last leg for me.

They didn't have really any opportunity to work together before (strike one) and then on test day, Scout was in RAGING heat (strike 2), but thanks to Susan's skill and persistence and a very generous judge, Scout got her second leg. and went on to win Best Herding Titled Bitch at the next two specialties.

So, I was not so sure about how she would do today, but with some good advice from the herding instructor, Scout did very well today. She said that I really should work her - she felt Scout has the potential to be a good herding dog. And I had a really good time today - I hope we can get back into it.

Later Sally did a instinct test. The first thing she had me do was sit Sally on a sheep's back while she held the sheep against the fence. Sally looked at me, like "lady, I don't think this is what I am supposed to do with them!"

The she had me put her on a long line and walk her around the fence line moving the sheep around. She sniffed around some, but mostly followed along. I dropped the rope and she kept moving some, sniffing some. The instructor told everyone, "she's just a little puppy, this is probably all she will do today, but she is showing interest.

About that time, one of the sheep turned around and challenged her a bit, and all of a sudden the light came on. Sally said, "I don't think so, you Ewe you! Turn around and and get back to work!" After that, the chase was on.

I caught back up with her and asked the instructor to come back in the ring and work her so that I could watch and video. By the time I got the camera and started shooting, she was beginning to wear out, but here she is:

Long time no post

It's just been busy around here. As usual, the first month of a quarter was just as hectic as ever. Also had friends and family visiting, the big weather event, the royal wedding, NBA playoffs - let's see - what other excuses can I make?

Anyway, I am here to report that the CrateMate 2.0 is now a sight to behold.

A new platform that holds two so-called "SUV crates" - 36 inch crates just a smidge narrower than standard (which of course makes them more expensive) so that two will fit side by side, and have doors on both ends. The platform is a little taller and wider giving more storage area below.

Spencer and Scout have always traveled together in the same crate, so now they get to play rock-paper-scissors to see who gets the crate all to themselves.

And I'll try to do better posting. I still owe Ocho updates on Lowri and Sally. Of course, Lowri has her own blog. Poor Sally, the third child - I just don't get around to making pictures like I used to. I will try to do better.

Most Sundays we spend the morning at Bernheim Forest where I’m learning to track along with my mom Kathy. Jimbo (our instructor) says I’m doing great, he tracks my big brother William and my partner in crime Amelia but thinks my mom needs to track me.

Then we take a walk with all my big sisters, the old lady Jeter, the superstar Flirt my best buddy Amelia and my big red buddy William.

During the week my mom teaches a beginning agility handling class and we all get to go hang out at the agility field, you ought to see me climb the A-Frame, run thru the tunnels and chute and I even walked the dog walk a time or two, I think I gave my mom a slight heart palpitation.

My mom says I need to go to puppy class and she has that scheduled for after the Kentucky Derby, I’m a busy girl. The rest of the time I’m just a normal puppy getting into everything, I really like the doggie door especially when I can run off with a roll of toilet paper and tear it up in the back yard.

Catching up with the Ocho -Tommy

Tommy is living the good life with Betty. I think he must have more toys than any dog in the world. (And I mean real toys, not empty water bottles like Sally has.)

He has been doing well in his obedience class and has started conformation class (not confirmation class, which what Betty's son thought she said. I guess he was wondering what what would be an appropriate first communion gift for a cardigan.)

Betty reports that today, Tommy went to the big show in Perry GA and entered the fun match there. He was the only cardi entered, so that BOB was easy, but then he went on to get a Herding Group 3rd place! He had a great time and got lots of scritches and attention.

First Papa Chase finished his Herding Started title with two high scoring Cardigan Champion wins.

Catching up with the Ocho - Abby

And here's the pic Tiffany posted today on Facebook. Her husband Jay posted, shortly afterwards, "where are her ears?" Tiffany replied, "I took this not too long after she got up this morning. These are her sweet ears!!! Isn't she freaking adorable??"

Tiffany went on to say, "She is doing so good. She is getting big and her ears have pretty much done all the lifting they're gonna do. They're not all the way up, but we LOVE them so I don't think Abby will have a crown lol. She has been such a blessing for Jay and I!! She is the love of our lives!! She has an amazing personality and I'm pretty sure she is the sweetest dog ever!! "

That's what's been the blessing for me of these pups - all these families who each got the best dog in the world! Happy 4 mo birthday to the Ocho!

Catching up with the Ocho - Big Nick!

Big Nick came into this world a charmer. He was always the special boy - the only red boy. When new folks came to visit the Ocho, inevitably he was the one people gravitated to. Whether it was his personality or just his incredible soft fuzziness, everyone wanted to pick up Nick.

Nick was my original first choice to keep. Even when it became evident that he was fluffy, I still thought about keeping him. But the more I thought about it, I realized that the reason I was so crazy about Nick was because Nick is so much like Spencer, and was it a smart idea to try to live with two over the top personalities in the same (small) house?

And the decision to let Nick go was easy when I found what I knew would be the perfect home for him with Liz and the Joeys. Nick would have both his very own boy and a brother cardi, Rufus, to show him the ropes. Here's Liz's report on life with Nick:

You probably know way more about Nick than you want to know! But he is doing just great. He and Rufus have really settled into a routine. They miss each other when one of them is missing! That has been the biggest surprise to all of us. Ruf still tries to steal toys and treats (he has chewed two of the super-chewer puppy KONG toys in half!) but they are really getting along well.

He is a huge love muffin. He loves attention, loves to give kisses, loves cuddling. He is definitely NOT a lap dog though, he is usually chewing on a chew toy or chasing his ball around. And of course, he has NEVER met a stranger. Every one of our friends comments how he is the "anti-Rufus" - he will go up to anyone with no fear, try to win their hearts over. And of course, he is so cute that everyone WANTS to love on him! I probably have mentioned this before, but he has really rubbed off on Rufus - when we take the two of them anywhere, Rufus will actually let strangers pet him! That would NEVER have happened before Nick. We are so proud. Rufus smiles about 99% of the time now, he is so happy to have a little buddy. Every so often, they will give each other kisses. Very sweet!

He still has that shoe fetish. No pair of shoes will be safe in our house. And he's not really destructive, he really likes carrying them around like trophies!

Nick will start at daycare next week, we're going to try one day a week for now since I'm working half-days on Fridays. We haven't had any playdates lately - Dewi had his surgery last week so they've been MIA, Stony the MinPin ate an eraser and had $2K in surgery (ouch) and my sister has been out of town with the hounds. I think he will definitely benefit from the extra exercise and more dog socialization.

Catching up with the Ocho - David

David has settled in with Alex, Allen and cardi brother Tim in Lexington. Here's what Alex had to say about what the boy is doing now:

Since I do not possess the technical skills to blog or send pictures, I thought I would send an update on the ocho littermate known as David. It has been 3 weeks since he arrived and it seems as if he has been with us for so much longer!

The trip home was uneventful - thank you for tiring him out. He had three hours to stare at his new cardi brother Tim. I think we matched temperments perfectly. Both dogs are cool and aloof as the breed standard states and they happily spend time doing both of the above. Housebreaking was a breeze because David mimics Tim so they go out together and perform in tandem! Play time in the house and in the yard wears them both out and is greatly appreciated by their parents.

When I first put a collar on David, he had a fit. Rolling and trying to peel it off- to no avail. But wait it gets better. I then bought a leash and we tried that. He went into his nest and sulked for about an hour. We go through this process dailey. I have now purchased string cheese so he can be bribed to walk about with me.

One of our favourite t.v. programs is Ceasar Milans Dog Whisperer. When good dogs go bad and start barking , David sits in front of the set and barks back at them. It is really funny! He is quite the little character. His favourite treat are mini organic carrots - he picked that up from Tim.

Well enough about his personality - I will try to describe the physical development of this pup for all you corgi affficianados. His weight is almost 17 pounds, he is a very good doer and never leaves a kibble. His front end which was quite wide when he was 8 weeks has come together nicely. He no longer looks like he spans the Brooklyn Bridge. Hind quarters have developed as has his athletisim. I liken him to some of our horses when they are young - no clue as to what they are doing, but slowly it all comes together.

This puppy is everything I hoped he would be and more. My husband who was not sure we should add another canine to our family just loves him. I can't thank you enough, Janet. I have never seen anyone take such wonderful care of their dogs and to document the process on puppy cam made me feel as if I were a part of the process of raising these pups. Pictures will come soon - probably via the mail. Also Liz and Nick should really look at doing a book - this stuff is really good. Regards to all the new owners of the ocho and the terrific people I met at the puppy party.

Catching up with the Ocho - Alli (fka Mary)

On Wednesday, the Ocho will be 4 months old! I've been catching up with them - and our first featured girl started out as Mary, now known as Alli. Here she is being loved on by mama when she was one day old.

And here she is with her very own girl today:

Alli is co-owned by Scout's breeder Marla, Mackenzie Mann and this young lady, Madison. Mackenzie's mom, Diana, sent the following:

She is getting so big, I can't believe she is the same puppy who flew here!! Madison has been doing a great job with her - I went to check to see if she had lost any baby teeth & she didn't even flinch when I looked at her mouth (one of the "assignment's" we gave Madison was to get her used to showing her bite) - she is confident, personable...& still a spitfire :) They told me she is also quite the herder - they have a few chickens & apparently Alli has been herding them all over the yard - to the point that sometimes the chickens come up on the deck just to get away from her :) Apparently when the chickens stop, so does Alli & just waits & watches - I told them that both of her parents were A1 herders...& that they should get her some ducks :)

Once we get back from the National, Madison & Alli are going to start taking handling/showing lessons from Mackenzie so that Madison will be ready to get back into the Jrs ring this spring, & so Alli will be ready to hit the show ring this summer, & maybe even be able to be Madison's Jrs dog once we breed Jenna. 4-H obedience classes start in a couple of weeks, but unfortunately Alli is too young, so Madison is going to do this year with one of their other dogs & use what she is learning to start Alli on some obedience basics - & then by next year she will be able to do the classes with Alli.

So now we settle into our routines. With the exception of some scary days in December, I can definitely say that my first foray into being a breeder was less work and more fun than I ever could have imagined. It was such a gift to watch my girl Scout be such a good mama after that scary start. I am so happy that seven happy, healthy pups are out there with their wonderful families, and that one sweet girl is chewing on Spencer's head at my feet as I type this.

David heads home tomorrow, and we are all going to miss him. David was the first puppy that Spencer would have anything to do with. David charmed him by snuggling up to him and cleaning his ears. David and Spencer love to wrassle with each other now. Of course, he and Sally are inseparable, being the last two together, and I know she will miss her buddy.

I call David the Fun Police - see how he fusses at Scout and Spencer whenever they start frapping. Warning - this is a noisy video!

I took the tape off Sally's ears tonight - hopefully she can do the rest of the work on her own - we'll give her couple of days to see. Also - look back in the puppy pen and see the work that Sally and David have been doing to remove the vinyl from the floor.

Sally's Big Adventure

Today Sally went to her first dog show. We got up early this morning to head a couple of hours west to the Cardigan supported show in Franklin, TN. I wanted to go see some of our cardi friends and thought it would be a good chance for Sally to experience the sights and sounds of dog show. Coincidentally, five years ago I went to this show and brought home a little red girl named Yum-Yum.

As Sally and I were headed out the door this morning, Spencer gave me a look like, "Don't I get to go too??" I said what the heck, having a friend along for the ride would be good for Sally, so I loaded Spence and Sally in the crate and off we went.

When we got to the showsite, I used a coupler and leash and the two of them marched in like they have been doing this forever. Sally got to meet lots of new people and loved all the attention. After judging and lunch, the cardi folks were going to have short educational session (a new requirement for supported shows, apparently) and the topic was very timely for us - "Taping Puppy Ears." Guess who got to be star of the show??

Sue and Brenda got her all taped up - and I think she is very proud of her new crown.

News from the Ocho:

First from the over-achievers:

Susan reports that Lowri is officially a herding dog. She says, "I had Kearney out on ducks. After he finished, I got Lowri out and used Kearney to just keep them in her vicinity. She herded ducks. When one split off, she went and got it and brought it back. She followed along behind them and actually herded. I am a happy camper."
According to Kathy, Ginger (fka Joanie) is also a working girl. "She went tracking on Sunday and did a great job, the wind was blowing and she followed the scent but came back to the track. William’s tracking handler was very impressed."

And from those recently settling into new homes:

Betty says, "Just wanted to let you know that Tommy is one smart boy. The first 2 nights I put him in his play-yard in the greatroom. He screamed both nights. I decided that I would go ahead and start crate training. I put him in my room in his crate with his fuzzy blanket and that was it! He sleeps all night. I take him out about 7 a.m. and he takes care of his potty needs. He walked today on a leash all the way to the mailbox. He loves Betsy and wants to chase her all day. This might be why she can now jump on the bed and sofa. They are so cute playing together."
Liz reports: "Nick's first day at home - two escapes, and the ingestion of half of a get-well card. On the good side, the underside of our bed is extremely clean from any dust bunnies or cobwebs."
Jay and Tiffany sent lots of pics and videos of sweet Abby. I thought this one was particularly cute - she's getting her big dog ears!

And back here our house, Sally and David have completely charmed Uncle Grump. They have him figured out and love to mess with him. Scout loves playing zoomies with them too. David has perfect cardi ears now - and Sally has perfect beagle ears. I think the little princess is set on having her very own duct tape crown.

This has been a week I will be glad to see in my rearview mirror. I generally try to keep my blog to the happy things that go on in my life, but this has been one of those weeks that make me want to run away and sell t-shirts on the beach.

Early this afternoon, I pulled up the puppy-cam on my phone, and was a little surprised when the picture was of the wall and the bottom of the table where the webcam normally sits. This meant that the table had been hit and the camera was knocked off and hanging by its cord. I txt'd Liz to ask her if she knew how long it been like that - she txt'd back that it had been fine at 11:30. I didn't worry too much about it and forgot about it until I opened the front door and was rushed not just by Spencer and Scout, but also the Three Amigos.

And then I saw this:

Was it a beaver??

And in the kitchen - which was only accessible to little dogs who could shimmy under the gate. Someone decided to gain access to the used litter I was too lazy to haul to the trash this morning. I think the little puddle of pee on the bag is a nice touch - don't you??

I brought the pups back in and after dinner they collapsed into this incredibly sweet puppy pile - it is out of exhaustion or a desparate attempt to curry favor??

So - the great unanswered question - who grew thumbs and got the pen open? Was it Uncle Grump Spencer who has decided he likes playing with the pups and has a history of springing their mother from her crate when she was about their age??

Or was it a certain pup we know has developed a taste for wood products?? Hmmmm, I guess if it never happens again after a certain someone leaves tomorrow - we'll have our suspicions!

P.S. I am secretly happy about the coffee table chewing. I decided this week I wanted a new, smaller and round coffee table - this behemoth just takes up too much room in my tiny little living room, but I couldn't see getting rid of a perfectly good piece of furniture - problem solved!!

A Long, Busy Weekend

We have been running back and forth to Calhoun, GA since Thursday so Spencer and Scout could do their dwarf-basenji imitations and run in the AKC's first lure coursing trial open to non-sighthounds. The puppies made the trip each day and were perfect little travelers and charmed everyone they met.

The brindles love their soft red pillow.

Spencer and Scout had a ball and did their breed proud. Everyone loved watching the short dogs run. They are the first cardis to earn the Coursing Ability (CA) title and Scout is the first Grand Champion to earn it as well.

It was also a big weekend for Tommy - he went home to his new home with Betty. Tommy is now Mockingbird It's the Magic in Me, and he is keeping the call name Tommy as well.

Now that I am down to three, I put up the big puppy pan and brought the small one back out again. The last time it was used, they looked like this.

So, for one more week, it is the Tres Amigos. Liz - you better hurry - notice Nick has an ear at half-mast!

David's ears have been up for a good bit - but Miss Sally is not even thinking about lifting hers yet - c'mon girlfriend - get with the program!

Puppy Personalities - College Edition

I am so happy that the puppies have left me gradually - I would have killed me to send them all away at once. Now I am down to four - Tommy will leave this weekend, Big Nick the next weekend, and then I will have David another week and a half.

I rush home from work every day so that we can all go out in the yard - they are at a very entertaining stage right now. Scout loves to play with them - sometimes she gets the zoomies and zips figure eights all around the place and puppies have a ball chasing her. Spencer is even warming up to them now that they are little dogs. He hasn't actually played with them, but he lets them snuggle up to him as long as they use their good manners.

Their personalities are coming out now. Today I thought that I could see who they would be if they were college students (bear with me here - it's just how it struck me):

David is that really cute, kind of quiet, serious engineering student. Always thinking. Can cut loose and have fun, but can also be counted on to be the designated driver.

Tommy is that freckle-faced freshman who looks (and acts) like a kid. Loud-mouth, but funny as heck. Always in the middle of everything. Loves it when the other guys roll him and chew on his head.

Sally is the pretty but still a little gawky tomboy, who is not burdened by anything serious. The good girl - who will run and play outside for an hour after dinner, then comes back in and goes straight to the litter box, because it would just be too gross to actually potty outside. (OK - college girls don't do that - or at least they didn't back in my day.)

And then, there's Nick. Big Nick. Nick is the Ole Miss Sigma Chi frat boy. (hoddy toddy gawdawmighty who the hell are we?) Wearing a pink button down oxford shirt that has been washed a million times and is stretched a bit tight around his cute little start at a beer belly, a pint of Jack Daniels in the hip pocket of his khaki pants, a devastating smile - the life of the party, doing keg stands until he passes out flat on his back.

The countdown continued today. My old friend Kathy Metcalfe came down from Louisville and picked up the newest member of her pack, the puppy formerly known as Joanie Baloney. She will now formally be known as Mockingbird Wyncrest's I Believe in Magic. Kathy is still thinking about a call name.

Whatever her name is, she is sure to have a bunch of titles on both ends of her name. Kathy and her pack do it all - in fact, Kathy is getting ready to go to the Eukanuba National Agility Championship Invitational in March with her Flirt.

See that crate in Kathy's picture? Well, as I type, little Mary is in that crate on her way to Minnesota where she is going to have her very own junior handler. Mary will be co-owned by the 3Ms: Marla, Mackenzie and Madison. I hear that Madison is also interested in agility and obedience too. Mary's flight has landed in Chicago and I will not rest until I know that she has been picked up by Diana and Mac.

The pups spent the day playing in the yard. I have puppy proofed the fence and feel comfortable giving them free run of the front yard (as long as I am out there with them!) They are good and tired (and of course, tired means good) and snoozing away. I wonder it they notice that their numbers are dwindling.

The babies are beginning to make their way out into the world. There were only 6 little heads in the pan for tonight's midnight snack.

On Saturday, Laurie became Lowri (Welsh for laurel), officially Mockingbird Elyan Magic Moment. Lowri will be co-owned by Susan, Gramma Penni and Cheryl, and live and train in East Tennessee with Susan. She has already had a look at the ducks and has a new best buddy in fellow cardi, Kearney.

Tonight, Abby headed home to Birmingham, AL with Tiffany and Jay. She will be registered as Mockingbird Black Magic Woman, but Tiffany and Jay are going to take a little time to find the perfect call name.

Big Nick is sticking around a little bit longer, but will soon be headed to Virginia with Liz, aka Builder Mama. Liz came down for the Puppy Party this weekend and fell in love. Be sure to add her to your blogroll so you can keep up with with Nick and her other cardi, Rufus. Nick will be registered as Mockingbird Could This Be Magic.

David will be "living like a king" according to his new owner, Alex. They will split their time between Kentucky and Florida, where Alex stays busy with racehorses. David will be Mockingbird Magical Mystery Tour.

We had our own version of the Puppy Bowl - an Open House where the pups could get to meet lots of new folks. Here are some pics from the day:

They got lots of love and snuggles and all handled it beautifully. Scout is enjoying being with her puppies again. Yesterday we had a photoshoot and Scout had so much fun playing with her pups. She teased them with a stick to get them to chase her - it was such a hoot. The photographer had a great time too - here is what she posted on her blog. That's Abby and Laurie snuggling with her.

It's been a busy week

Or at least that is my excuse for not getting more pictures posted. I can't believe the babies are already almost 8 weeks old. They have a busy weekend planned. Saturday we are going to visit a pet photographer to get some pics of the pups and their mom. Sunday we are having our own version of the "Puppy Bowl" - we're having an Open House in the afternoon for the local friends to drop in for a nosh and a puppy squeeze.

And then the next weekend, OMG!!! They start heading to their forever homes. The crack you hear is my heart.

Anyhow - here is some cute. This is how they looked last Sunday evening after spending time playing outside:

Puppies get a living space upgrade

On Friday, the vet said that it would be best for Scout if we gave her system a break and go ahead and wean the puppies. I had been putting off removing the big box from the puppy pen because it provided a barrier between Scout and the pups when she wanted it, but now there was no reason not to give the pups more space.

So, we scooted the pups and their big box to the end of the pen and put the whelping box-turned-litter box in. Then we just lifted the big box up and over their heads and all of a sudden it was new world. I wish I had my phone handy so that I could have recorded the mayhem as they ran and tumbled all over the place - it was a hoot to behold.

Now they had more room for more toys.

More room to eat more food.

And a big bed to play king of the hill and snooze on.

David, Abby and Tommy thought that they still like a crowding together for a nap, tho.

A Squirmy Tub o' Pups Goes to the Vet

Hard to believe, but it was already time for The Ocho to get their 6 week shots and a check up at the vet.

We brought the party to the vet's office. So many of the staff helped out with the emergency c-section, and they all were so excited to see how well everyone is doing.

Lauri, Susan and Big Nick weighed in at 4.75, dainty Miss Mary was 4.00, and the rest were in between. They all did great on the table, not so much as a peep when when temps were taken, shots were given and worms were checked (none, btw!)

They loved all of the attention - and the treats.

When we go back in three weeks, we will obviously need a different transport solution.

By the time we left, they had all settled down for a little nap. All in all an excellent adventure for all of us.

Sunday in the Puppy Pen

The pups are being too much fun! Yesterday, the intrepid Tommy once again escaped - this time over the high wall. I was standing right there watching, snapping pics, and caught him going right over the wall, and afterwards when he was so proud of his feat. Unfortunately, when I went to load the pics on the computer, I realized that, once again, I shot my potentially award winning photographs when there was NO DISK IN THE CAMERA.

Oh well, here are cute ones anyway. I have had to improve security now that they are so interested in what happens outside the box. Scout is now locked up in the x-pen with them when I am out of pocket. She's been ok with it. Tomorrow they will already be 5 weeks old, and since I know for a fact that they have needle sharp teeth (as evidenced by my newly pierced left ear), I would imagine her mama time with them will be coming to an end.

I have been grinding their food in the food processor - tonight they graduated to eating kibble soaked in warm water with yogurt.

The Ocho is a month old today!

Happy Birthday Babies! For your birthday, you got a bigger litter box!

Now let's use it! Some like the little grassy pee spot too. However, I found that the favorite spot seemed to be the the blue pads that I was really putting down for them sleep on. Since they don't seem to mind sleeping on the floor or on sock monkey, I decided that maybe if I didn't put a pad in, they might be more encouraged to use the litter - we'll see.

We all love the sock monkey bed. The combined weight of the puppies is very close to what Scout weighs now. The puppies eat non-mom food twice a day, but she seems to still be nursing a few times a day. She is eating like crazy now and not gaining any weight, so I guess she is still busy making milk.

The Ocho at 4 Weeks

Four weeks ago today we had an ice storm. Then we had snow at Christmas.

And today we have 8 inches of snow. I think these guys are causing it.

I am trying the little potty patch today. I did not buy this from the infomercial - but I did see it in the wee hours this morning. I found it at Bed Bath and Beyond and used my 20% coupon to give it a try. I'll let you know how it goes. Some have been using the litter box, but I need to find a bigger pan.

The Ocho Makes a Move

As I have mentioned, the whelping box has been getting smaller as the Ocho gets bigger. The whelping box is right next to my bed, and I like having them there at night. I was kind of dreading having to move them to the big box because that would mean I could no longer have them so convenient to me at night.

Then I had a lightbulb moment. I could go ahead and set up the big box in dining room-turned puppy room, and still keep the the smaller box in my bedroom for a few more nights. Once I wean myself from them, the little box will become the litter box in the puppy room. Today the pups made their first trip to the big box, and to mark the occasion, they also had their first meal from a pan.

In the dining room, I took the leaf out of my dining table and moved it to the other side of the room next to the sideboard. I bought a remnant of vinyl and put it down to protect the hardwood. I lined the walls with ex-pens to hopefully protect the baseboards and wall to some extent.

I already had some eyehooks in the baseboards and door facings from way back when this was Spencer's puppy pen, so I hooked the ex-pens to the eyehooks to secure them.

The pups went right for lunch in the pan - a tasty mixture of evaporated milk, egg, baby food beef, yogurt, water and baby food brown rice.

All at least tried it - some ate more than others, but eventually all decided to have Mom for dessert.

Scout thought her pups were very tasty and cleaned them right up.

Now they have much more room to motor around - and plenty of room for the sock monkey bed and some of the toys sent by Gramma Penni. Scout seems very comfortable with the new set up too.
