My (selectively) Deaf Dog

Scout is my outside dog. She went out this morning at 5 AM, came in briefly to eat breakfast, and then right back outside. Now that it's time to go to work, she parks herself in the farthest corner of the yard and pretends like she can't hear me calling her.

IT'S GENETIC! Sister Moira loves the great outdoors and refuses to come in too. She will also sit at the back door (glass storm door) staring out at the yard with the most pathetic look on her face until she is let out. Can't wait to see you next year in PA!

Absolutely genetic. Both the selective hearing and the outside dog thing. I blogged yesterday about Graces Chase me game. EVIL red girls.

It might be the color -- yes? The red girls are sweet and stubborn, on their own trajectory.

ok my Sadie is a RED brindle....down from kind of the same lines.....it could be genetic...or alpha bitch? sadie will ignore me and i'll be hollerin' in the dark...only to see her 10 feet away in the dark shadows watching me act a fool. she takes her time and usually has to potty once more before she comes in.

This is of course if it is NOT raining...if it is raining she has to be pushed outside to go potty and gives me the diva is being deprived look!

I have a few of those "selective hearing" dogs, too...and no, not red. My blue girl, Dreamy, does the same thing. We actually thought she was deaf for a while, and used hand signals. But, she actually heard us one time when I said the outside word, and the jig was up! Ornery dogs!! hehe Gotta love 'em! :)

Hmm, I wonder if that's another commonality of the red dogs. :-) Breezy won't come in, even to eat breakfast in the mornings. She can't hear me (even though her ears are pointed back toward the house), but once everyone else is eating, she'll run in, eat something, and then she wants back out. I call her my junkyard dog.

I think there is a secret, Evil Red Dogs club! I live w/4 reds and shre custody of a 5th and every one of them has their evil moments - chasing the cat, stealing a rival's toys and peeing on them, jumping on tables to eat unattended food, refusing to come when called.....

I can certainly relate - I think it's a Cardi thing. "Yes, I hear you, but I'm choosing not to do what you request right now, thank you."

For me, it's part of what makes them fun. How boring would life be if my dogs did everything I asked, when I asked it...? Wait. Maybe that would be a fun thing to find out.

It's a redhead thing. Just ask my husband... I have the dishwater red/blond thing going on, and I'm the SAME way ;0P
